Spiritually Growing with Cancer - History, Purpose, Group Norms
History
The idea of a support group focused on spiritual growth started when I had a request from one of our members to help them locate a group like this. There are many cancer support groups, that focus on physical and emotional and include some aspects of the spiritual, but the only one I could find was at Calvary Lutheran and it was mainly their own members, although it was open to anyone. I spoke with our former Senior Pastor about this and that I thought we could start a group here. He not only agreed, but wanted to help co-lead. We started by just asking those who came to the first meeting what would be most meaningful to them. They suggested a list of things that included: prayer, scripture discussions about healing stories of Jesus and Biblical characters, music, fellowship, sharing faith stories, discussing healing vs curing and always holding up hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Purpose
- A support group where we experience God’s love together to help us grow in our Spiritual lives while living with cancer.
- We recognize that healing comes in many ways and encompasses body, mind and spirit.
- We are here to support one another through the good reports and the not so good reports and pray for one another.
- We want to learn together to walk this uncertain journey with cancer that we did not choose and discover ways to grow in our faith.
Group Norms
- Confidentiality - everything said in this room stays in this room.
- Any emotion we experience is okay including anger and it is a safe place to express how we are feeling.
- We will focus specifically on the effects of cancer on our lives – relationships, family, emotional and spiritual.
- We will laugh, sing, pray, rejoice, cry and grieve losses together.
- We will uphold each other in prayer during the week.
